Faro is the only commercial airport and is the first thing people will see as they step off their plane. This is mind Faro is not just an airport and although most people only see Faro as they drive away in a tour bus to their chosen resort, it has much more to offer than just a landing pad. The capitol of the Algarve and even after being devastated by the 1755 earthquake Faro still holds much of its history and the old town is well worth a visit. Faro also houses the maritime museum (based next door to the harbourmasters office).
Faro’s cathedral is in the Largo da se, along with the bishop’s palace and the town hall.
After being badly damaged the outside has been remodeled. From here there are panoramic views across the town, the lagoons and the salt marshes.
Faro and its surrounding areas also boast 4 of the Algarve’s top golf course.
